thought for the day

Experiences vs things

The longer you live, the more things you usually accumulate. And if that teaches you anything, it is that things don't guarantee happiness. At first getting a new... something, whatever it is you wished for, can feel great. But surprise surprise - after some time has passed, that thing doesn't give you such a feeling of happiness anymore. You are used to it. It has become an everyday item.

Experiences, however, don't seem to lose their magic. When you concentrate on something that made a big emotional impact, you remember that thing like you only just experienced it.

Now of course this applies to both good and bad. So concentrate on the good ones as much as you can, because your mind doesn't really understand time. The mind interprets the emotions of your memory as happening in the present. And this immediately affects your mood in the now.

So concentrate on the good things. And what better way to do that than to write down your good experiences in as much detail as you need to return to that good feeling place when you read your own notes. It doesn't have to be floral language and long sentences, if that is not your style. It can be just a few words if that is enough to bring that good memory to the surface.

When you are in the midst of an emotion you define as negative (sadness, anger, frustration), don't deny it. Experience it. It is not possible in that moment to jump into a positive feeling with the snap of your fingers. If you try to push the negative feeling away by force, you always lose.

When you have calmed down a little, that is the time to look into your past good memories. And even then, remember you are not a failure if you don't immediately feel great. A little progress is enough, feeling slightly better. It is the first step towards even better feelings.

picture of the day

TURQUOISE METAL

I took this picture in Forum Marinum, a local maritime museum here in Turku, Finland. It shows metal that has changed colour in the sea. The spotlights turned the metal into turquoise colour and it looked beautifully abstract.

Spaghetti and Sauce

Where to spaghetti and sauce go to dance?

The meat ball.
